Glossary of Poker Terms

Below are some of the most common poker terms, some of which we have used throughout the different sections. Hoepfully this will help you understand the game of poker more.

Action – also known as betting

All-in – All chips which the player has is played

Ante – An amount which all players have to put into the pot inorder to play. This is not part of the actual game.

Blind – This is term used in Texas Hold’em, like an ante money has to be put into the pot but only by two players. The big-blind is the minimum amount of the bet in full and small blind is half the amount of the bet.

Bluff – player choose to play with a bad hand, trying to make another player fold

Board – term can be used to descibe the 5 community cards placed on the table by the dealer

Buy-in – Usually it is the required amount to enter a tournament, the more exclusive the event the more the buy in will be.

Bots – automatic robot which acts as a player in a game, form of cheating method

Call – when a player wants to match the previous players bet the term is used.

Check – This is a option which allows for player to stay in the hand with in the current hand without needing to make a bet, call or raise. A check can also be used by the big blind in only 1st round (if no other player raises) and by the first player to make a bet in any of the rounds. The last possible way to use this option by all players till someone make a bet.

Check Fold – player can check when able to and fold when bet into

Check Raise – player can check when able to and raise when bet into

Community cards – these are the cards which are dealt by the dealer, they appear faced up on the board and can be used by all the players.

Concealed Pair – Pair of card which are faced down

Connectors – Usually two cards which follow a sequence

Cowboys – A poker term for cards which are Two kings

Dead Card – these are cards which are no longer part of the game as they have already been played

Dealer Button – Usually used by the dealer in a online game to deal the cards, will rotate clockwise after each hand

Deuce / Duck– A poker term for a card which is a single two

Drawing Hand – when a player required more card to complete a hand either a flush or straight

Fish Hooks – A poker term for a cards which is used for Two Jacks

Flop – This is usually the name for the 2nd round, the dealer will deal the first 3 cards of the game

Fold – Player can use this option to quit the game and not continue.

Hole cards/Pocket cards – These are two cards which all players recieve faced down, during the pre-flop

Ladies – A poker term for a cards which are Two queens

Lay-down – when a player decides to fold a strong hand

Muck – players can fold during the game and not require to show the cards to the other players

Nuts – this is a term which can descibe the the best hand a player has based on the cards on the board.

Opener – the first player to start, without any prerequisite

Over-card – is term used for the highest card on the board

Payout – the amount of money a player leaves with after winning

Raise – increase in the previous bet

Rake – usually found on pokersite, represent a small percentage of money which goes to the site

Ring Game – A game which allows players to leave any time after buying in

River – Term used for the last card dealt by the dealer in the game, in Texas Hold’em this is known as 5th street

Rockets/Pocket Rockets – A poker term for a cards which are a Pair of aces

Split Pair – Term used when one card is on the board and the other matching card is hidden.

Trips – A poker term used for card which represent three of a kind
